AVID Program Overview
(Advancement via Individual Determination)
AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is an international program geared toward providing motivated students with support as they complete a college preparatory course of study in high school. AVID students challenge themselves by enrolling in courses with rigorous curricula (such as honors and advanced placement courses) thus providing for an education which will promote success in college. AVID students also spend time preparing for college entrance exams (such as the SAT and ACT) and completing college admission and scholarship applications.
AVID students will:
- participate in student-led tutorial sessions twice a week, within the school day, during the AVID elective class. During the tutorial sessions, AVID students may bring questions from any of their other classes. The tutors may be college students, experienced AVID students or college graduates.
- become familiar with colleges from across the nation through participation in field trips, college presentations and research.
- learn to become organized, thus promoting success in all classes. All AVID students follow specific guidelines for maintaining an effective AVID binder.
- enroll in honors and advanced placement (AP) courses. Even if an AVID student never envisioned challenging him/herself by taking rigorous courses, the additional support of the AVID program will assist in building the confidence and study skills necessary to excel in such courses.
- become involved members of campus clubs, activities and sports. Such involvements not only provide for an overall better high school experience, but they also provide for a more competitive college resume.
